Shameful Neglect; A Dilapidated Dwelling Derails Education Transformation at Kwakwani Primary School

KWAKWANI, September 3, 2023 – As the hands of the clock edge towards 4:40 PM today, a significant oversight emerges at the heart of Kwakwani Primary School. The residence intended for the school’s headmistress stands starkly in disrepair, overshadowing the hopeful future of education for Guyanese students in this region.

Back in May 2023, the school community welcomed the appointment of a new headmistress, who promised to usher in a promising chapter in the school’s history. However, that optimism has been overshadowed by tangible hurdles; the headmistress is yet to take up her role, primarily due to the uninhabitable state of her official residence.

Though the Regional Administration of Region Ten had a considerable break during the school’s closure to address the residence’s issues, no discernible action has been taken. This lack of urgency has only further highlighted the administration’s seeming indifference towards the pressing educational needs of the children.

As the new academic year kicks off tomorrow, students will energetically return to their classrooms. But they’ll be met with a glaring void: the absence of the very headmistress appointed to nurture their academic growth.

It’s noteworthy that Kwakwani Primary School, amidst its potential, ranks among the lowest-performing schools in Region Ten. This position underscores the urgency of the school’s transformational needs and the vital role that the new headmistress could play in that journey.

The community’s growing unrest is palpable, with many vocalizing their concerns about the Regional Administration’s perceived laxity. The headmistress’s uninhabited dwelling, bathed in the fading evening light, has unfortunately become a symbol of the broader systemic challenges plaguing the region’s education system.

As dawn breaks tomorrow, heralding the school’s reopening, the void in Kwakwani Primary School’s leadership will be felt more than ever. This situation starkly illuminates the administrative lapses in Region Ten, urging introspection into its commitment levels. The persistent oversight serves as a resounding call to prioritize and foster the dreams and aspirations of Guyana’s youth.
