APNU Presses Government as Cash Grant Demands Surge Amid Worsening Hardships

By Mark DaCosta-The recent press conference held by the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has shone a spotlight on the significant economic struggles faced by ordinary citizens. From rising food prices to inadequate government responses, the APNU stated that the last five years of leadership under the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) have culminated in a public outcry for urgent action.

In their statement, the APNU painted a stark picture of the reality faced by many Guyanese households, asserting that citizens have been left vulnerable and exposed due to the current administration’s mismanagement. The APNU’s analysis indicates a sharp and sustained rise in the cost of living from 2020 to 2025, with food prices reportedly being the primary contributor to ongoing inflation. They emphasised the disconnect between government claims of economic growth resulting from oil revenues and the shared reality of increasing hardship, stating, “Merely saying GDP growth from oil does not translate automatically into a quality life for Guyanese.”

With independent reporting confirming that essential goods have dramatically increased in price, many families are struggling. The omission of effective social relief measures has compounded these challenges, leading the APNU to call for immediate, transparent intervention from the government. They proposed a significant cash grant, noting the critical importance of alleviating the burden on citizens, particularly in the lead-up to the festive season.

APNU’s proposal outlined a cash grant of at least $150,000 for each citizen aged 18 and older. “This initiative will help in alleviating financial strains faced by many families,” they asserted, putting forth that such financial support could significantly stimulate local economies during a crucial time.

This recommendation comes against the backdrop of the Guyanese government having previously allocated $100,000 in 2024 to each eligible citizen. Given the huge escalation in living expenses and projected population growth, the APNU argues for a reassessment of this grant to better serve the needs of the populace, particularly the impoverished. The party pointed out the government’s mid-year revenue projections for 2025, which forecast an increase to $497.3 billion, indicating the feasibility of their proposal. They noted, “This amount represents a manageable percentage of the total projected government revenues,” thus reinforcing their argument for a cash transfer initiative that could directly benefit those most in need.

The pressing issue of poverty was highlighted, with approximately 58 percent of the population reportedly living in such conditions, according to the Inter-American Development Bank. The APNU underscored that cash grants would provide immediate support and improved living conditions for these vulnerable groups. Furthermore, they highlighted that increased cash flow from the grants could stimulate demand in various sectors, thereby promoting job creation and revitalising the economy.

Critically, the APNU expressed frustration over the PPP/C government’s approach to social and fiscal management, labelling it inconsistent and lacking accountability. They condemned the recent remarks made by President Irfaan Ali concerning cash grants, arguing that such statements were demeaning and politically coercive. “If you behave yourself, you get it this year” has, according to the APNU, shifted the narrative away from genuine assistance to a tool for political manipulation.

The partnership demands urgently that the PPP/C government publishes a detailed implementation plan for the proposed cash transfers and approaches Parliament to fast-track the necessary approvals for this much-needed relief. The urgency of these demands is underscored by the intensity of public sentiment, with APNU calling for a public awareness campaign to ensure citizens are informed about the cash grant and its intended use to maximise economic benefits within the community.

As the economic situation continues to evolve, the APNU has also voiced significant concern about national security. They argue that the government’s increased allocations for national defence must translate into practical, actionable solutions to ensure the safety of the citizenry. The APNU highlighted the urgent need for a non-partisan national security assessment, suggesting that vulnerabilities in our borders require substantial investment and robust measures to protect lives and infrastructure.

The APNU is advocating not just for immediate cash support but for a fundamental shift in how our nation’s resources are managed and distributed. They demand transparency and fiscal responsibility from the government, coupled with comprehensive strategies that align with the stated commitments made to the people. For many Guyanese, the demands and recommendations from the APNU resonate deeply, reflecting their frustrations and hopes for a government that genuinely addresses their needs, rather than merely offering empty promises in the face of economic adversity.

It remains to be seen how the PPP/C will respond to these pressing calls, but the urgency for real action and accountability has never been clearer.
