Protest against alleged rape of a minor by minister taken to Consulate Office in New York

Today, hundreds of Guyanese gathered in front of the Guyana New York Consulate to demand justice for the alleged child rape by Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Nigel Dharamlall, and the cover-up by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government. One attendee stated that, “We are outraged by the lack of accountability and transparency in this case. We are appalled by the silence and complicity of the PPP leaders and supporters. We are disgusted by the victim-blaming and intimidation tactics used by the Minister and his cronies.

We stand in solidarity with the brave survivor and her family who have spoken out against this heinous crime. We call on the international community and human rights organizations to pressure the PPP government to conduct a fair and independent investigation into this matter. We urge all Guyanese to join us in this fight for justice and dignity for our children.

We will not rest until Minister Dharamlall is removed from office and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We will not tolerate any more PPP cover-ups and corruption. We will not let our children suffer in silence.”
