Education Officials visit the Cane View/Mocha community, Social Workers still to visit

Friday a team of Officers from the Ministry of Education visited the Cane View/Mocha community to engage parents and students with a view of ensuring that the children attend school.

The team comprised officers from the Ministry’s Health and Family Life Education (HFLE) Unit and the Welfare Unit of the Department of Education – Region Four. The team was led by Assistant Chief Education Officer (HFLE), Ms. Carol Benn.

According to Ms. Benn her team was able to engage 16 children from seven households and will work to ensure that they continue to receive an education, and where frequent absences were noted, that the parties collaborate to end that.

The government said the team is expected to return today to take in supplies so that all children could attend school on Monday.

The government’s brutality in bulldozing homes, and destroying residents’ personal possessions will not only affect children’s attendance at school but the entire incident is traumatic for children and adults. The government is yet to recognise this and dispatch social workers to help residents deal with trauma and provide required support to restore normalcy to their lives.

Veteran trade unionist, Lincoln Lewis, writing in his Eye on Guyana column said the nation is losing its sense of moral decency, conscience, and humanity of one towards another.  According to the trade unionist, “what we are witnessing is no different than what occurred during the immediate post emancipation period, albeit it was not with bulldozers, to kill the spirit, destroy and dismantle the struggle of a people for self-determination and to live on their feet with dignity and pride. “
