Masakenari eyed an organic honey production hub

The government has stated its intent to invest in the community on Saturday as Dr President Irfaan Ali proposed the new “One Guyana rainforest organic honey,” brand. The ‘one Guyana’ plays off the slogan being used by the president to promote national projects and an attempt at brand identity in using the allocation of the state’s resources, financial and otherwise.

According to the president “We will create one Guyana rainforest organic honey coming out of this community and sold all across the Caribbean” as he offered government commitment to “to make all the investment”in realising the project.

The Ministry of Agriculture is expected to visit the area to conduct an assessment to see if residents, specifically young people, could be trained in apiculture. Government also gave assurance when the project gets going it will be pushed to international standards.

Apart from the promised honey project, residents were informed the government is planning to distribute two pairs of black giant chickens to improve agriculture and livestock production. It is said the black giant is a large dual-purpose chicken, which can produce up to 200 eggs annually, and about 4.5 kilogrammes of meat.

The government said they want to make the hinterland regions less reliant on the coast for their food supplies, more specifically by targeting the hinterland residential schools. The village reportedly comprised 70 households.
