Aunty Stella’s new home

– thanks to Village Council

In June 2020, the Aishalton Village Council came to know of a woman by the name of ‘Aunty Stella’, a wheelchair-bound amputee and a pensioner. Aunty Stella’s leg was amputated due to her Type 2 diabetic condition and, as an elderly woman, this posed many challenges to her as she often had to travel some six kilometers to and from her home and the central village.

Hearing of her plight, Toshao, Michael Thomas, vowed that the Council would build a new home for the woman. “The Council met for an emergency discussion and decided to make this a reality at the earliest. We therefore will be building a house in the village for Aunty Stella who agrees to move in immediately,” Thomas notified the public on his Facebook page in June.

In July, another update greeted the public when the Toshao announced that construction had begun. However, more help was needed to complete the house and Thomas urged those able to give to do so.

“My dear friends, villagers and kind-hearted people, a few weeks ago Aishalton Village Council identified an area to build a house for Aunty Stella who is really in need of a home.

We have started the construction of her house located east of the Hospital. We are presently on day three. We once again humbly ask you for whatever u have to donate towards the completion of Aunty Stella’s house, and we thank those of u who have already contributed in whatever way,” he pleaded.

On Thursday, Thomas was pleased to announce that, with the help of many kind individuals, a new home for Aunty Stella has become a reality. The completed home, painted in orange and green, was donated to the woman with a small ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the handover.

Aunty Stella was given the keys to her new home while other items donated were also handed over. A new water pump and water trestle were installed to ensure that water goes directly to the house and villages who visited were pleased, along with Aunty Stella, to see the transformation.

“Aunty Stella moves in to her new home. A big thank you to all who generously contributed to the completion of Aunty Stella’s house. After a lot of effort, we have completed the house and now she is comfortable in her own home. Thank you to the Village Council,  sawmen, carpenters, GWI staff, CORE, health staff of Aishalton,” the Toshao stated.

He also gave special thanks to Rayan Farias, Grant Ken, Sabrina Gomes, Samantha Gomes, Sherene Sheik, Mark Realine, Rene Edwards, Tina Edwards, Minime Torquarto, Mavis Gomes, Linus Paul, Thomas Williams, Anthony James, Silvan Domingo, Lucas Thomas, Bernard Antone, Johnny Domingo, Romanex, Marudi and all other who assisted whole heartedly.
