Ninety-six teachers have earned Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) certification through the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), supporting efforts to expand practical, career-focused education across Guyana.

At CPCE, CVQ became a mandatory part of the curriculum in 2023 for students specialising in Agricultural Science, Industrial Technology, Home Economics and Visual Arts.

The college began the process of becoming a registered CVQ institution in November 2024 and secured registration in June 2025, allowing it to register students directly for certification.

The initiative supports CPCE’s efforts to improve technical instruction and prepare students for further training and employment.

At the graduation ceremony on Monday, Minister of Education Sonia Parag challenged the perception that technical and vocational education and training (TVET) is inferior to traditional academic pathways.

“Technical and vocational education is not a lesser pathway. It is essential to preparing our people for the opportunities ahead and building a skilled workforce that can contribute to Guyana’s continued development,” Minister Parag said.

She urged the teachers to take pride in their achievement and use their training to inspire students and improve technical instruction in their respective institutions.

Deputy Chief Education Officer Technical, Dr Ritesh Tularam, described the achievement as a milestone in professional development.

“The achievement of a CVQ represents a commitment to nationally and regionally recognised occupational standards,” Dr Tularam said, noting that the qualification demonstrates competence in a specific occupational area.

He encouraged the recipients to apply their training in the classroom, strengthen competency-based assessment and mentor colleagues.
