Boy hit to head by fellow student recovering well after surgery— mother

Mother of the New Silver City Secondary School student who was dealt a blow to his head by another student said that her son is recovering well from the emergency surgery he underwent 19 days ago.

“At the moment my son is doing okay, the doctor said he is recovering well,” she related.

The woman’s son had to undergo a $1.2M surgery for head injuries he sustained during an altercation with another student in March 2022.

The mother related that she covered $500,000 of the surgical cost, while the government covered the remaining $700,000 of the $1.2M procedure.

According to the woman, her son has been discharged from the hospital and is currently housed at an apartment in Georgetown with her since he is still healing and is unable to travel back to Linden at the moment.

The Linder’s son is expected to attend clinic every Wednesday and is scheduled to see his doctor in the next three weeks who will determine if he would be able to resume schooling.

The single parent mother said that the incident has changed both of their lives significantly.

“My son is out of school, he is in Form 4 and should be preparing to write CSEC next year and I do not know how that will go for him,” she explained.

She added, “For me it is a whole financial strain because I am a single parent and I am in financial debt because I had to borrow money to reach the $500,000. We had some small donations and that helped a lot because we are in town and I had to rent an apartment for one month for us and I’m also renting in Linden and then there is transportation fee and attending clinic is money too so that is the situation.”

The mother shared that her son is a cool and jovial individual who wanted to become an engineer prior to the incident. However, the young man now wishes to become a neurosurgeon.

She noted that the government should implement “punishments” for children who portray violent acts in school to let them know their behaviour is unacceptable.

Meanwhile, the 56-year-old mother of the student who dealt the other student a blow to the head with an object during an altercation said that she is sincerely sorry about the entire situation.

“I feel very bad, I feel real bad. It frustrates me a lot but I am sure that it will strengthen me to the end,” she said.

The mother related that her son’s father died when he was 11 years old and being a single parent is not easy but she tries her best with her three children.

The single parent mother described her son as a loving person who enjoys helping out in the home.

“My son is a good, nice, loving person. When I am at work he would wash the wares and would clean up before I come home. He does even want to cook. He said mommy, show me how to cook stew because I can only cook rice mommy. You can send him anywhere and so through my street the neighbours would send him to bring water for them,” she related.

In a consented interview with Village Voice News, the 15-year-old boy who dealt the other student a blow to the head said that he wishes to turn back the hands of time.

“I feel real bad about what happened and if I could have gone back in time and change what happened I would,” he said.

The young man who wishes to become an aircraft mechanic is advising youths to stay focus and say no to violence.

“I would like to tell young people to stay focus, do your school work and do not pick violence,” posited.

In the interim, the matter is being reviewed by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
