CJIA accredited as safe for travelers

The Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) has received a 12-month accreditation for being in keeping with internationally-recommended best practices for aviation health and safety amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The accreditation certificate was presented by Director General of the Airports Council International (ACI) Luis Felipe de Oliveira to CJIA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ramesh Ghir today, by way of letter.

The Director-General expressed his congratulations to the CJIA team for achieving the International Airport accreditation in the ACI’s ‘Airport Health Accreditation programme’.

“After reviewing the evidence presented through our evaluation process, your airport has shown that it is providing a safe airport experience for all travelers which is in line with the recommended health measures established in the ACI Aviation Business Restart and Recovery guidelines and ICAO Council Aviation Recovery Task Force Recommendations, along with industry best practices,” he wrote.

“This programme is designed to help reassure the traveling public that airport facilities remain sage and that precautions are being taken to reduce any risk to their health. We feel confident your efforts will help us succeed in achieving this common goal.”

Guyana’s international airports remain closed to international travel save for repatriation flights, cargo flights, fuel stops, medevac, and special authorized flights which are a part of Phase One of a phased reopening programme.

On Tuesday, Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) Director of Aviation Safety and Security, Abraham Doris reported that Phase Two has tentatively been pushed to October 1, 2020, as authorities are still to decide on whether they can manage the possible positive cases which could slip through should they move to the next phase.

Phase Two of the reopening will cater to limited flights to Guyana for citizens, permanent residents, international workers, and diplomats.
