Another cohort of Guyanese students is set to pursue higher education and professional training in China as the Government seeks to strengthen the country’s human capital and equip citizens with skills needed to support a rapidly expanding economy.

The initiative forms part of the 2026 Chinese Government Scholarship Programme, with Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation Minister Zulfikar Ally urging recipients to view the opportunity as more than a pathway to academic qualifications.

“It is not just about studying. It is about learning different things, learning different cultures, learning ways in which, as a country, we can improve and do better,” Ally told the scholarship recipients.

The Minister said the students would have a responsibility to return with knowledge and skills that can contribute to Guyana’s continued transformation.

The scholarship programme comes against the backdrop of increasingly broad cooperation between Guyana and China, encompassing infrastructure, financing, technology, healthcare, education and skills development.

Ally pointed to projects including the new Demerara River Bridge and regional hospitals as examples of China’s involvement in Guyana’s development, while stressing the importance of developing Guyanese professionals capable of taking advantage of the country’s emerging opportunities.

According to the Minister, approximately 170 Guyanese students have studied in China over the past six years, while Guyanese nationals have also benefited from scholarship and training opportunities in countries including India, Chile, Peru and Mexico.

The latest scholarships are therefore being presented as part of a broader effort to build a highly educated and technically skilled workforce capable of supporting economic diversification and national development.

Chinese Ambassador to Guyana Yang Yang said education and training have become increasingly important components of the bilateral relationship, particularly as Guyana enters a period of rapid economic and technological change.

“Talent, as a foundation of national strength, is highly important in technology and projects, but it is people who move the work… people with knowledge, skills and experience to turn opportunities into progress,” the ambassador explained.

Yang said this year’s Guyana-China cooperation also includes professional training in areas such as agriculture and digital governance, as well as efforts to strengthen the Guyana-China Alumni Association.

The association is expected to provide opportunities for former scholarship recipients and other participants to share knowledge, expand professional networks and develop partnerships between the two countries.

The students have been encouraged to use their time in China not only to pursue academic excellence but also to gain exposure to the country’s culture, history, technological development and international community.

The Government’s emphasis on human capital development comes as Guyana seeks to translate its expanding natural-resource wealth and economic growth into broader national capacity.

The scholarship programme is consequently being positioned as an investment extending beyond the individual recipients. By developing professionals with specialised knowledge, international exposure and technical skills, the initiative is intended to strengthen Guyana’s ability to manage new industries, adopt emerging technologies and build a more diversified economy.

Ultimately, the success of the programme will depend not simply on how many Guyanese earn qualifications overseas, but on how effectively their knowledge is brought home and applied to Guyana’s development.
