Carl Craig, the 50-year-old driver, who was involved in the horrific accident at Caledonia that claimed the lives of a Linden couple on November 18, was placed on a total of $1M bail.

The Guyana Police Force, in a statement, said Craig, who resides at Soesdyke, was charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving when he appeared at the Diamond Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

He appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman, and pleaded not guilty to offence. He was subsequently placed on $500,000 bail for each count.

The matter has been adjourned to December 15, 2021.

During the initial stage of the investigation, Craig told police investigators that he was veering from an unknown truck, which was reserving at the time, when his canter (GWW 4922) slammed into the car, which was driven by Nicholas Valcin, a resident of Wisroc, Linden. The accident occurred at around 14:45hrs on November 18 in the vicinity of Caledonia on the East Bank Demerara corridor.

Nicholas Valcin and his wife, Olisa Sanderson Valcin, who was also in the car, died while receiving treatment at the Diamond Diagnostic Diagnostic Centre on Thursday afternoon.

Mrs. Valcin, who was a Senior Assistant Mistress at the Wisburg Secondary School, was heavily pregnant at the time of her death. She was 31-years-old while her husband was 42. They leave to mourn a three-year-old daughter.

Another passenger, 20-year-old Shaquel Williams of Blue Berry Hill, Linden was hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC).

According to the police, Craig was proceeding north along the western side of East Bank corridor whilst Mr. Valcin was proceeding south along the eastern side of the road in his car PXX 8815.

“As both vehicles were approaching a landfill site, situated on the western side off the road, an unknown motor lorry which was transporting sand was reversing from east to west on the road into the land filling site causing the driver of motor lorry # GWW 4922 to pull in a north easterly direction to pass the reversing lorry. In so doing he ended up in the path of motorcar # PXX 8815 and collided head on,” the police had detailed.
