Police are investigating the alleged murder of Tyrone Thomas, age unknown, of Charity, Essequibo Coast, which occurred between 1st – 6th September, 2020 at Thomas Island, Puruni River.
Investigations revealed that the deceased had been working as a miner on a land dredge which is located on Thomas Island. According to the owner of the dredge, a 25-year-old resident of Victoria Village, East Coast Demerara, on August 16th, 2020 he left the deceased and another worker, a Brazilian National, in the camp.
About one week ago he received a phone call from the deceased who informed him that the Brazilian national had left the camp. He also informed the police that on Saturday September, 5th, about 19:00 hours, himself along with two other new workers, whom he brought from Georgetown, went to the camp at Thomas Island and upon arrival they did not see the deceased.
The following day about 07:00 hours, the owner claimed that he smelt a stench from the Puruni River close by his camp and went to investigate, where he observed the body of the deceased wrapped in a multicolored hammock stuck besides a tree in the river.
Police ranks upon visiting the scene observed that the hands and legs of the victim were bound and a gaping wound above the right eye.
The body is currently at the Bartica Public Hospital Mortuary awaiting a Post Mortem Examination.
Investigations are continuing.
