A fire of unknown origin on Saturday evening ripped through a wooden two-storied house at Lancaster Village, Corentyne Berbice leaving one person homeless.

Nothing was saved from the house during the blaze

The house went up in flames just after 18:00hrs despite valiant efforts by members of the Guyana Fire Service to put out the blaze. The entire building was engulfed in flames within minutes even before the fire brigade from the Rose Hall Fire Station was able to respond.

The occupant of the house whose only name was given as Zallymoon was home when the fire started on the upper flat of the building. She managed to escape the blaze. According to a neighbour, Chandrwattie Naul, she was inside her house when she heard a loud noise and then received a call that Aunty Zallymoon’s house was on fire. “I opened the door and saw smoke so I rushed to get the keys and open the door. The entire wall on one side is damage, all the windows were shattered, the mattress was already burning and the rooms were scorched as well.”

Village Voice understands that the elderly woman suffers from a mental disorder and was however unable to speak at the time. Reports are that she was in the upper flat of the building when the fire started but neighbours ensured she was safely out of the house. Unfortunately, nothing was saved from the house.
