Cane cutter dies after run over by excavator

A cane cutter operating at Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara was crushed by an excavator on Wednesday.
Dead is Deochand Lallchand 62, of Patentia, West Bank Demerara.

Police in a statement said that enquiries disclosed that the cane harvester was in the estate backdam picking up bundle of  cane a short distance away behind the excavator which suddenly started to reverse east at a slow rate of speed without stopping.

The excavator track then collided with the man causing him to fall to the ground. He was then run over by the machine.
Lallchand was picked up and escorted by the police to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty who pronounced him dead on arrival.

His body was later escorted to Ezekiel Funeral Home for storage awaiting post mortem examination.

The excavator operator, Vickram Seepersaud age 44 years of lot 692 Recht Door Zee, Parafaite Harmonie, West Bank was arrested and placed into custody. Further investigation in progress.
