…LGC commissioners rubbish claims that decision on town clerk was unanimous

Chairman of the Local Government Commission (LGC), Julius Faerber has been accused of presenting misinformation to the public on matters relating to the Georgetown Mayor and Council.

Chairman of the LGC, Julius Faeber

Last Friday, Faeber, in a press statement, said that the Local Government Commission, on July 27, took a unanimous to have the then acting Town Clerk, Sherry Jerrick reverted to her substantive position of Assistant Town Clerk.

But Commissioners Nicola Trotman and Joan Ann Romascindo have said Faeber’s statement is furthest from the truth. According to the two commissioners, the Chairman’s statement contained factual inaccuracies designed to create mischief.

Commissioner Trotman said the decision to reassign Jerrick was not unanimous since she did not vote. “The vote was majority, not unanimous,” the two commissioners posited.

They further maintained that the appointment of Candace Nelson as interim Town Clerk for the City of Georgetown was never raised or discussed at the statutory meeting.

“The assertion that it did is a bold face falsehood,” the Commissioners said while pointing out that the Chairman admitted to having made a unilateral decision which has not been ratified by the Commission to date.

The reminded that during the July 27, 2021 meeting, Commissioner Trotman enquired who would act as Town Clerk should Jerrick be reverted to her substantive position, and was told that that particular issue was not on the table.

“…Commissioner Carvil Duncan vehemently interjected, stating that the matter of who would act was not tabled for discussion and consequently no such discussion should be entertained. The Chairman agreed with Commissioner Duncan and no discussion on the matter took place,” the Commissioners explained.

They added: “We are both unaware of when and at what meeting the Commission is purported to have made the decision to appoint Ms. Candace Nelson as Acting Town Clerk. We did not participate nor were we invited to any such meeting. We present these facts in an effort to allow for the truth to be known.”

However, the LGC Chairman said the decision of the LGC to appoint Nelson to act as Town Clerk constitutes a valid exercise of its statutory functions through the same process employed by the LGC in the past to appoint successive acting Town Clerks, including Jerrick.
