Using plastic waste to build schools

According to the United Nations Environment Programme we produce about 300 million tonnes of plastic waste every year which is nearly equivalent to the weight of the entire human population. Plastic is a pollutant and threatens the environment because it is not a biodegradable product. To manage the waste and pollutant UNICEF has partnered with Conceptos Plasticos, a Columbian social business that transforms plastic waste into construction materials, and built a school for children in Côte d’Ivoire, a West African country. Just imagine if Guyana saw the wisdom in doing likewise this waste could become a sustainable product. Watch the joy in the faces of these children as they were given a school and opportunity to education, a right which is enshrined as in the Rights of the Child Declaration.
