When it comes to healthcare, most people act re-actively instead of proactively. They won’t go to the doctor until they’re sick and they won’t take care of their body until problems start to arise. People don’t want to spend money on healthcare until they feel like it’s completely necessary. But the problem with that is you’ll be spending a whole lot more on fixing a problem than preventing it in the first place. That’s why people need to understand the importance of preventive health care. Keep reading to learn more about the benefits of preventive care and how you can start practicing it now.

The Importance of Preventive Health Care
Preventive health care can be a hard sell to people who feel they are completely healthy and don’t need to spend money or time worrying about their health. With that being said, here’s why people absolutely need to practice preventive health care.

Improves Your Health in the Long-Term
Preventive care means catching potential problems before they become real problems. For example, if you get regular wellness checks your blood pressure will be tested regularly. If your healthcare professional notices that it’s increasing, you can start doing things to lower your blood pressure before it becomes problematic.

Increases Lifespan
Preventive care can drastically increase your lifespan because it allows you to catch things early and treat them much easier. For example, if you practice weight management and lose excess weight/keep that weight off, you will increase your lifespan and prevent serious diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Avoid High Medical Expenses
It’s a lot less expensive to practice preventive healthcare than to only seek help when there’s a problem. Preventive care will either catch diseases before they become too serious, which will drastically reduce the cost of treatment, or it will inform you of problem areas to be mindful of, which can prevent future diseases altogether.

Additionally, most health insurance plans will cover preventive care costs completely even if you haven’t hit your deductible, making it a much more attractive option than dishing out thousands of dollars for treatments.

Ways to Practice Preventive Care
So, now that you know how important preventive care is, how can you practice it? Here are some of the things you should be doing to maintain your health and prevent future problems.

Weight Management
Being overweight or obese is one of the biggest risk factors for diabetes, heart disease, and even certain kinds of cancer. That’s why weight management is essential for preventive care. This includes regular exercise and eating healthy to lose excess weight and to keep that weight off. However, losing weight can often seem like an insurmountable challenge, which is why many people give up after a short period. If that’s the case for you, know that you aren’t alone in that struggle. Fortunately, there are ways to start tipping the scale in your favor so you can finally reach your healthy weight.

Mental Health Screenings
When people think of health care, oftentimes mental health is an afterthought. But unfortunately, depression and other mental health problems can lead to one of the leading causes of death in the United States: suicide.

Additionally, mental health problems can lead to substance abuse disorder, which often results in overdoses. Also, mental health can negatively affect our activity levels, eating habits, and stress levels which leads to a wide range of other health complications.

That’s why mental health screenings for things like depression are so important and can help people focus on resolving those issues before they cause problems in other areas of their lives.

Physical Health Screenings
There are a ton of physical health screenings that people should be getting depending on their gender, age, and health history including:
Type 2 diabetes
Cervical cancer
Breast cancer
Prostate cancer
Colorectal cancer
High cholesterol
Osteoporosis

By screening for these things, it’ll be a lot more likely that you catch a disease in the early stages while it’s easier to treat.

Vaccines
Vaccines are perhaps the most popular type of preventive care because they’re easy and extremely effective. Some of the vaccines you should be getting include:
Hepatitis A
Tetanus
Shingles
Pneumonia

Additionally, people should be getting seasonal flu shots to better protect them from contracting the virus, especially if they are older and more susceptible to serious health problems as a result of the flu.

Wellness Exams
Wellness exams, also known as annual physicals, are essential for anyone, no matter their age or health history. This is where your provider will check things like blood pressure, heart rate, height, weight, cholesterol, and glucose levels.

If you’re having any health concerns, you may also get your blood drawn for additional testing to check for any deficiencies that are impacting your life. If you’re a woman, you should be getting an additional annual exam with your gynecologist who will perform a pap smear and breast examination to screen for any potential health concerns.

Losing Weight Is Vital for Preventive Care
Being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing things like heart disease and diabetes and can drastically reduce your life span. That’s why it’s important to shed those extra pounds once and for all so you can maintain a healthier lifestyle.
