…U.S citizens urged to exercise caution due to crime in Guyana
A visitor was robbed just outside of the U.S Embassy at Duke and Young Streets, Kingston earlier on Monday, May 24, 2021.
The U.S Embassy, in a statement, said the robbery took place at approximately 7:14hrs as a visitor of the Embassy was attempting to park in a parking spot directly across the Embassy. “The assailants were traveling on motorbikes and did not present any weapons, but used physical force to grab personal items from inside the victim’s vehicle,” the US Embassy detailed.
In the statement, the Embassy urged US citizens to be cautious while in Guyana as a result of the crime situation.
“The Embassy reminds U.S. citizens to exercise caution due to crime in Guyana. Report crimes or attempted crimes immediately to the local police in Georgetown by dialing 911 or the Guyana Police Force Quick Response Hotline at +592 225-6411,” the Embassy urged.
It said US citizens should keep a low profile. “Do not display expensive items such as jewellery, cellphone or laptop. Be aware of your surroundings, particularly when entering and exiting your vehicle. Provide your colleagues and family with your daily plans and how to reach you. Do not leave any valuables inside your vehicle. Do not physically resist any robbery attempt. Be a good witness by recording the suspect’s description, license number and vehicle information,” the Embassy further urged.
Last month, President Irfaan Ali said the Administration has limited resources to fight crime.
“Our country is developing at a massive rate and, as I recently told the private sector, we have limited resources in managing both external and domestic threats to our country’s security. We have recognised the fact that our law enforcement capacity is challenged by the sophisticated evolution of criminal enterprise and my Government understands the responsibility of meeting the challenge to protect our people, their lives, and their property,” the President had said in response to the Private Sector’s concern over the spate in criminal activities.
The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) had said the escalating crime rate was of major concern. “The perpetuation of these violent crimes is of great concern to the members of the Chamber as it directly impacts the welfare of the citizens and enterprises of the country,” the GCCI said.
In particular, GCCI said it has been noted that there seems to be an increasing rate of criminal activities against the business community.
