US President Donald Trump drew attention at a Michigan political rally on Sunday after making a suggestive comment about rapper Nicki Minaj’s backside while praising her appearance.
Speaking at McMorran Place Arena in Port Huron on October 25, Trump referred to Minaj while discussing earlier comments about Republican Senator Jon Husted’s physique.
“By the way, I looked at one hell of a beautiful ass before: Nicki Minaj,” Trump told the crowd.
He then encouraged Minaj to stand, adding:
“That’s hard to miss.”
Trump later acknowledged that the remark might have offended the rapper.
“I hope Nicki wasn’t insulted, but we love Nicki. She’s been with us for a long time.”
The exchange was reported by The Guardian and other media houses
Minaj backs Republican candidates
Minaj, the Trinidadian-born rapper who has increasingly aligned herself with Trump, attended the rally to support Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers and gubernatorial candidate John James ahead of the November 2026 midterm elections.
Addressing the crowd, she praised Trump’s leadership and reaffirmed her support for his administration.
“I am so honored to be working with this president,” she said, adding that he had “changed the energy of our country” and given Americans “a future to look forward to”.
Minaj’s political alignment has attracted attention because of her global fan base and her earlier criticism of Trump’s immigration policies. In January 2026, she appeared at an event promoting the administration’s Trump Accounts programme and described herself as the president’s “number-one fan”.
Personal remarks overshadow campaign message
Trump’s comment added an unexpected personal exchange to a rally intended to build support for Republican candidates in Michigan, where control of the Senate seat and governor’s office will be contested.
The incident also reflects Trump’s informal and often provocative speaking style at public events, where remarks about individuals can compete with campaign issues for attention.
Although Minaj appeared receptive to the exchange, Trump’s language became a focus of media coverage, shifting attention from the candidates and their electoral campaigns to the president’s public comments about the entertainer’s appearance.
