Barbados’ inaugural Women’s Prime Minister’s Cup kicked off on Saturday, October 17, bringing 10 teams into a new competition aimed at raising the profile of women’s football and creating greater opportunities for female players.
The tournament features all eight teams from the Barbados Football Association’s Kotex Women’s League, alongside Kickstart Rush Women and Weymouth Wales. The first prize is BDS$100,000, providing a significant incentive for the participating clubs.
Paradise have been identified as favourites for the inaugural title, with the competition offering clubs an opportunity to establish themselves in a tournament dedicated to women’s football.
The participating teams are drawn from Barbados’ domestic women’s football structure, reflecting efforts to expand the sport’s competitive opportunities and increase its visibility.
Organisers initially hoped to attract 12 teams but settled on 10 following an extension of the registration deadline.
The introduction of the women’s division expands the Prime Minister’s Cup programme, which already features a men’s competition. The new tournament is intended to provide a more prominent platform for female footballers while encouraging broader participation in the sport.
The competition also offers clubs the opportunity to build momentum, develop emerging players and attract greater attention to women’s football in Barbados.
The men’s Prime Minister’s Cup has also produced competitive action, with Empire and Kickstart Rush securing places in the round of 16 after their Group A encounter.
The women’s tournament is scheduled to culminate in a final on November 30, 2026, as part of the wider Prime Minister’s Cup programme.
The launch comes amid continuing efforts to strengthen women’s football across the Caribbean, where dedicated competitions can help players gain experience, improve standards and create greater visibility for the women’s game.
With the inaugural tournament now underway, attention will focus on the performances of the participating clubs and whether the competition can establish itself as a lasting feature of Barbados’ football calendar.
