Guyana, we are witnessing one of the greatest national tragedies in our history. The capsizing of the MV Barima has had a devastating impact on the lives of our Indigenous First Peoples. The consequences of this disaster are being felt across entire communities, underscoring the urgent need for support, accountability, and decisive action. As families mourn, search for loved ones, and struggle to cope with the aftermath, the nation must unite in solidarity, ensure every effort is made to assist those affected, and take meaningful steps to prevent such a tragedy from ever occurring again.

The capsizing of the MV Barima also raises profound questions about the People’s Progressive Party’s (PPP) thirty-five years in government and whether there has been a callous disregard for the lives of our brothers and sisters in the Indigenous communities. Did the Government misrepresent the seaworthiness of the vessel?

Disturbing reports have surfaced regarding tender documents allegedly outlining maintenance requirements for the MV Barima. If those reports are accurate, they raise serious questions about whether the vessel was seaworthy before it departed.

It is also alleged that the MV Barima suffered from numerous structural and mechanical deficiencies. If these allegations are proven true, Guyanese will rightly ask whether the Government endangered the lives of our Indigenous First Peoples, contributing to this grave national tragedy.

Every Indigenous community should now take a close look at governance and demand accountability from the Ali-led PPP Government. While the full extent of the tragedy’s impact is still unfolding as rescue, recovery, and investigative efforts continue, we can no longer ignore the longstanding challenges facing Indigenous communities.

Allegations that the Government has protected sexual predators who prey on young Indigenous women, coupled with poor roads, deteriorating bridges, inadequate public infrastructure, and now serious questions surrounding the alleged seaworthiness of the MV Barima, paint a deeply troubling picture that demands answers.

If it is ultimately established that negligence, regulatory failures, or poor governance contributed to this disaster, those responsible must be held fully accountable. The people of Guyana deserve the truth. Indigenous communities deserve justice. No government should ever place political expediency above the safety and welfare of its citizens.

The statements made by Public Works Minister Bishop Juan Edghill regarding the circumstances surrounding this tragedy have only intensified public concern. Many Guyanese believe they deserve full transparency, complete disclosure of all relevant records, and an independent investigation capable of determining exactly what happened and who bears responsibility.

The lives lost and the suffering inflicted cannot be dismissed or forgotten. This tragedy must serve as a turning point. Those entrusted with safeguarding the lives of Guyanese must be held accountable if they failed in that duty. The people of Guyana—and especially our Indigenous First Peoples—deserve nothing less.
