Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced that admission will be free for the upcoming One-Day Internationals between the West Indies and New Zealand at Kensington Oval, allowing thousands of fans to pay tribute to the late Sir Garfield Sobers, widely regarded as the greatest all-round cricketer in the history of the game.

The matches, scheduled for Sunday, July 19, and Tuesday, July 21, will begin at 10:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively, and will serve as celebrations of Sir Garfield’s life and legacy following his death on Friday, July 17.

CWI said special tributes will be held during both fixtures to honour Sir Garfield’s extraordinary contribution to cricket, Barbados, the Caribbean and the wider world.

Fans who have already purchased tickets will receive full refunds, which the regional cricket body said will be processed within seven days.

CWI Chief Executive Officer Chris Dehring said the decision to open the gates free of charge reflects the profound impact Sir Garfield had on generations of West Indians and cricket lovers across the globe.

“Sir Garfield Sobers belonged to all of us. While Barbados was his home, his brilliance united the Caribbean and captivated the cricketing world. Kensington Oval is a fitting place to honour his life and incomparable career, a venue where so many unforgettable chapters of his remarkable journey were written.”

He added that CWI wanted to ensure every Barbadian had the opportunity to participate in honouring one of the sport’s greatest figures.

“We want every individual in Barbados to have the opportunity to come together as one cricket family to honour a man who inspired millions and whose legacy will live forever. These matches will be more than international cricket fixtures; they will be celebrations of an extraordinary life and a chance for all of us to say thank you to the greatest cricketer the game has ever known.”

Sir Garfield, a Barbados-born cricketing icon, is widely regarded as one of the finest players ever to grace the game. During an illustrious international career spanning two decades, he revolutionised the role of the all-rounder, becoming the first player to score six sixes in a single first-class over and helping establish the West Indies as a dominant force in world cricket. His achievements earned him a knighthood in 1975 and, in 1998, he was named one of the National Heroes of Barbados.

Cricket West Indies has invited Barbadians, visitors to the island and cricket fans from across the region to attend the matches and join the West Indies and New Zealand teams in celebrating the life of a sporting legend whose influence extended far beyond the boundary.
