By Mark DaCosta- The recent allegations of sexual misconduct involving a teacher and nine schoolgirls at a secondary school in Georgetown have ignited a firestorm of anger and concern among citizens, including from the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party. Their statement echoes a widespread sentiment of betrayal felt by the community, as educators are entrusted with the safety and development of children. WIN’s critique highlights the urgent need for accountability and a thorough investigation to protect the welfare of the affected students.

The grim reports indicate that a male Physical Education teacher, who has served at the institution for approximately three years, is accused of engaging in inappropriate and threatening behaviour towards the students. Following the allegations lodged on 13th March 2026, the Ministry of Education took immediate action by placing the teacher on administrative leave, initiating a series of protective protocols. Yet, despite these steps, WIN asserts that measures taken may not be enough. The party demands a comprehensive, independent inquiry led by the Guyana Police Force and the Child Care and Protection Agency, alongside active involvement from the school’s governing body.

“As a nation, we cannot stand idly by while our children suffer,” WIN stated in their passionate plea. The party also expressed deep concern over the alleged attempts by the teacher to reach out to the students, reportedly issuing threats that could exacerbate the traumatic experience for the victims. Such actions, if true, call into question the adequacy of the Ministry’s immediate response and suggest the necessity for further protective measures.

WIN underscores the importance of providing counselling and support for all affected students, recognising the critical role mental health services play in the recovery process. “Clear and timely communication between the authorities and the parents” is paramount, they stress, highlighting the need for transparency in a situation that has already caused significant distress within families. Moreover, the party calls for a revision of child protection policies and the reporting systems within schools to prevent future violations and ensure the safety of students.

The Ministry of Education, in its  statements, has asserted its dedication to procedural integrity, affirming no delays in the investigative process. They highlighted their engagement with the parents of the involved students from the initial report until a forensic interview was carried out, but contrasting narratives have raised doubts among many. The ongoing crisis has drawn attention to a more significant issue facing our nation, as alarming statistics indicate that Guyana grapples with hundreds of sexual assault cases each month.

Such abuse of trust by educators and others are not just isolated incidents, but rather a reflection of systemic weaknesses within our institutions. The recent case has sparked conversations about safeguarding protocols and the necessity for urgent reforms within the education sector to ensure that protecting our children takes precedence over institutional reputations. WIN encapsulates the sentiment of the public: “Our hearts are broken by such acts,” they lament, reaffirming their commitment to standing with victims and their families during this distressing time.

As voices grow louder demanding justice, there remains an urgency to scrutinise the effectiveness of oversight mechanisms in schools and question the accountability of those in power. WIN’s call to the Ministry of Education to adopt decisive measures echoes the need for comprehensive action to prevent further tragedies of this nature. The true test lies not only in how the institutions respond to this harrowing situation but also in the long-term changes instituted to secure a safe environment for all students.

In a nation where the well-being of children should be paramount, instances of betrayal like these underscore the fundamental need for vigilance and proactive measures from both educational authorities and the government. The community now watches closely — hoping for meaningful reforms and assurances that such violations of trust will no longer be tolerated. As the investigation unfolds, the nation’s resolve must remain steadfast in support of the victims and their call for justice.
