The Orthopaedic Department of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has achieved a remarkable milestone, successfully completing 28 joint replacement surgeries over a focused three-day initiative held last weekend, from Friday to Sunday, November 7th–10th, 2025.

The dedicated team of orthopaedic surgeons, anesthetists, physiotherapists, nurses, and operating theatre staff led by Dr Kaaleshwar Ramcharran set a target of 27 surgeries, but they exceeded expectations by performing 28 procedures. The surgeries included 18 knee replacements and 10 hip replacements, bringing relief and improved mobility to 22 female and 6 male patients.

Joint replacement surgeries are among the most transformative orthopaedic procedures, restoring quality of life to individuals suffering from severe joint pain or disability. At private institutions, such procedures can cost approximately GYD $2.5 million per surgery, outlining the significant value of this initiative to the patients who benefited from GPHC.

The successful completion of this intensive surgical schedule demonstrates the department’s growing capacity, efficiency, and commitment to delivering world-class orthopaedic care in Guyana. It also reflects GPHC’s ongoing investment in advancing surgical services, enhancing patient outcomes, and reducing waiting lists for essential procedures. To date, all patients who benefited from the replacement surgeries have been discharged.

The management of GPHC extends heartfelt appreciation to the orthopaedic team for their dedication, teamwork, and continued service in improving the lives of citizens through compassionate and expert care.
