The Alliance For Change (AFC) has called for a national day of remembrance for children who have died under tragic circumstances, following the killing of six-year-old Orlando Jaikaran.

In a statement issued on October 21, 2026, the party expressed deep sadness over Jaikaran’s death, describing the killing as “most heinous” and a crime “of the most vile and gruesome nature.”

The AFC said the deaths of children should prompt national reflection on the responsibility of adults to protect young people and provide them with safe and nurturing environments.

The party stated:

It is the responsibility and duty of all adults to provide a safe and nurturing environment where every child can reach their full potential to contribute positively to the development of our country. Every child deserves to be loved, cared for and protected.

The AFC questioned how adults entrusted with protecting children could become responsible for their deaths, urging the nation to examine the causes of such violence.

As a nation, we must examine where we went wrong when, the arms that should protect a child become the very arms that inflict death. It is difficult to understand how an adult can look into the innocent, trusting eyes of a child and kill that child.

The party noted that the country had mourned the deaths of several children in recent months and called on national leaders, particularly religious leaders, to take a more active role in promoting what it described as a moral revival.

Within the past few months, our nation has had to mourn the death of so many of our children. We call on all leaders, especially religious leaders, to play a more engaging role in guiding the moral revival of our nation.

The AFC also cautioned against allowing economic progress to overshadow the importance of compassion and social responsibility.

In this era when our national wealth is increasing exponentially, it is important that we do not lose our humanity.

As part of its response, the party proposed establishing a national day to honour children whose lives were cut short under tragic circumstances.

The Alliance For Change proposes a national day to remember our children whose lives were cut short under tragic circumstances. Let their names and their lives be remembered. Let us show the world, the lives of all our children matter.

The statement did not provide details on how the proposed day would be organised or whether the party had formally approached the relevant authorities to implement the initiative.
