As Guyana observes Emancipation Day, IDPADA-G makes an urgent national appeal to address both historical and ongoing ethnic inequalities holistically. On this day of remembrance, we honour the resilience of African Guyanese—descendants of those brought here in chains from as early as 1627, who endured centuries of slavery, brutality, and post-emancipation exclusion without restitution.
Emancipation in 1838 brought no reparations, free lands, or protection from the structural inequalities that have persisted across generations. Even today, African Guyanese communities continue to face disproportionate poverty and unequal access to development opportunities—despite their immense contributions to Guyana’s foundation and progress.
To break this cycle, IDPADA-G has formally submitted a Concept Note to the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC), proposing a National Ethnic Disparity Audit and Equity Action Plan. This initiative is designed to cull data disaggregated by ethnicity, uncover systemic inequities, and chart a path toward inclusive policy reform.
This proposal aligns with Guyana’s obligations under the UN Decade for People of African Descent, the International Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, and the Sustainable Development Goals.
We call on the ERC, the Government, all contesting political parties, and Guyanese of conscience to support this vital national project. Let Emancipation Day be more than a celebration—let it be a turning point. Let truth lead. Let justice speak. Let equity prevail.
