The potential of a multi-faceted athlete knows no bounds, and for Leeward Islands representative Jahzara Claxton, this philosophy drives her in the ongoing CG United Women’s Super 50 Cup in St. Kitts.
Claxton, a proud Kittian, has also represented the West Indies at the youth level. She is focused on reaching the summit of the game through unwavering dedication, hard work, and discipline.
Cricket is now Claxton’s third sport. She initially played football and competed in track & field—specifically in the demanding heptathlon, which consists of seven events spread over two days.
Claxton represented St. Kitts and Nevis in the CARIFTA Games and insists she only participated for fun. However, in the 2023 edition in the Bahamas, she was on the verge of winning a silver medal but was disqualified due to a lane violation in the 800 meters, finishing seventh instead.
The disqualification prompted the Minister of Foreign Affairs of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Denzil Douglas, to publicly support Claxton on social media, calling her an unstoppable athlete who deserves encouragement and recognition.
Not that the setback deterred her ambitions or determination—it only reaffirmed her true passion: cricket.
“I wanted to focus more on cricket and make it my career to fulfil my potential and dreams as much as possible,” Claxton explained.
“It has allowed me to travel around the world and meet new friends from different countries.”
Claxton dreams of playing at the highest level, and she recently added another milestone to her journey by competing in the Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia in January 2025.
“A really good experience,” she reflected. “I got to learn different conditions around the world and challenge myself against people my age while continuing to improve my game to become the best I can be.”
There are no shortcuts to success for the talented Claxton, who has clear goals for the next five years of her budding career.
“My main goal is to make the West Indies senior team and be consistent with strong performances in regional tournaments to enhance my selection chances.”
Cricket has shaped Claxton’s journey, and at just 18, she is embracing a leadership role within her Leeward Islands team.
“I love my team spirit; we get along very well. But in terms of cricket, we need to improve our all-round play to compete and close the gap with the top teams in the region.”
Fortune favours the brave, and Jahzara Claxton is carving her own path to success with a determined mindset.
