Guyana Amazon Warriors Women entered Saturday’s Women’s Caribbean Premier League encounter against unbeaten Trinbago Knight Riders Women needing a major turnaround as the expanded four-team tournament reaches a critical stage.
The teams met Saturday at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, with Trinbago entering the contest having won both of its previous matches. Guyana, meanwhile, had suffered a one-wicket defeat to tournament newcomers Jamaica Empress in its opening match.
The 2026 WCPL has expanded to four teams with the introduction of Jamaica Empress, joining Guyana, Barbados and Trinbago. All matches are being played in Barbados from September 5 to 17.
Trinbago began its campaign with a 21-run victory over Barbados before producing an even more dominant performance against Jamaica Empress, winning by nine wickets after restricting Jamaica to 100-8 and reaching its target in only 11.1 overs.
Guyana’s opening match against Jamaica produced one of the tournament’s first major shocks. The Empress, making their franchise debut, chased down Guyana’s 138-7 with 136-9 in a rain-reduced contest, winning by one wicket under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.
The Warriors therefore entered Saturday’s match under pressure to secure points and keep their campaign alive.
The WCPL’s expansion is being viewed as an important development in women’s Caribbean cricket because it provides another professional franchise and more opportunities for regional and international players.
Saturday’s other match features Barbados Tridents Women against Jamaica Empress, also at Kensington Oval. The league stage concludes Sunday with Guyana facing Barbados before the September 16 playoff and September 17 final.
The tournament’s expansion comes as Cricket West Indies and the CPL continue efforts to create more competitive opportunities for women cricketers and strengthen the professional pathway into regional and international cricket.
