Guyana is sending a 44-member delegation to Argentina for the XIII South American Games, giving the country’s athletes an opportunity to compete against more than 4,000 competitors while pursuing qualification opportunities for the 2027 Pan American Games.

The Games officially begin Saturday, September 12, and run through September 26 across Rosario, Santa Fe and Rafaela. Athletes from 15 countries will compete in 43 sports and 60 disciplines, with approximately 465 medal events scheduled.

Guyana’s delegation, competing under the Guyana Olympic Association, will participate in athletics, archery, boxing, esports, squash, table tennis, taekwondo and tennis.

The competition has significance beyond the immediate medal standings. Several events provide qualification opportunities for the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima, making the Argentine competition part of Guyana’s broader preparation for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Guyana Olympic Association President Godfrey Munroe said the size and diversity of the delegation reflects the development of the country’s high-performance sporting system.

“The participation of athletes across eight disciplines reflects the growing breadth of Guyanese sport and the determination of our national federations and athletes to compete successfully at the highest regional level.”

Munroe said the Games should also be viewed as part of a longer-term athlete-development programme rather than solely as a medal competition.

“These Games are not only about immediate results; they are an important part of our wider athlete-development and qualification pathway towards the 2027 Pan American Games and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.”

The South American Games form part of an unusually busy year for Guyanese sport. The GOA said it has supported more than 400 athletes and officials across more than 12 disciplines in international competitions during 2026.

For Guyana’s athletes, the Argentine Games therefore provide both immediate competition and an opportunity to gain experience against some of the continent’s strongest sporting nations.
