By Pt. Ubraj Narine-As the world continues to navigate the complexities of geopolitics, economic challenges, and climate change, the importance of strong, strategic international relationships has never been clearer. One such relationship that has flourished in recent years is the partnership between Guyana and India, a bond built on shared values, mutual respect, and a commitment to global development.

It is with this in mind that I call on President Irfaan Ali to honour Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi with the highest national award of Guyana, The Order of Excellence (O.E.).

A Multitude of Supportive Brothers….

Prime Minister Modi’s leadership has been instrumental in fostering a new era of cooperation between India and Guyana, particularly in areas such as economic development, energy, infrastructure, and education. Under his stewardship, India has not only been a source of inspiration for democratic values but also an active partner in helping Guyana address its developmental challenges.

The relationship between India and Guyana has deep historical and cultural roots, with a significant Indian diaspora in Guyana that has contributed immensely to the social fabric of the nation. In recent years, however, the engagement between the two nations has moved beyond cultural ties to more concrete and impactful areas of cooperation.

Prime Minister Modi’s leadership has seen the expansion of India’s diplomatic footprint in the Caribbean, with Guyana as a key partner. His government has committed significant resources to strengthening the ties between the two countries, most notably through collaborations in the energy sector, where India has provided both technical expertise and financial support. India’s assistance in the development of Guyana’s oil and gas sector is crucial as the country positions itself as a key player in the global energy market.

Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi

India has supported Guyana’s efforts to diversify its economy and enhance its infrastructure. From capacity-building initiatives to the sharing of technical knowledge in areas such as agriculture and health, India’s involvement has been a catalyst for Guyana’s development.

Prime Minister Modi’s focus on South-South cooperation and his push for greater partnerships between India and countries in the Global South have been instrumental in bringing the two nations closer together.

Prime Minister Modi’s diplomatic vision extends beyond bilateral interests. His commitment to multilateralism and his leadership in global forums like the United Nations and the G20 have reinforced India’s position as a global power. Under his leadership, India has become a strong voice for developing nations and has championed issues such as climate justice, sustainable development, and equitable access to resources. Guyana, a small but influential nation in the Caribbean, has benefitted from this broader global vision, and the strengthening of ties with India has been an essential part of this broader strategy.

Modi’s “Act East” policy has also opened doors for greater economic engagement with countries in the Caribbean, positioning Guyana to benefit from India’s growing economic and technological prowess. The establishment of the India-Caribbean Forum, in which Guyana plays a prominent role, is a testament to the forward-thinking approach that has characterized Modi’s foreign policy.

The Order of Excellence (O.E.) of Guyana is awarded to individuals or organizations who have made significant contributions to the development of the country or to the advancement of global peace and prosperity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s contributions to Guyana’s development and his efforts to deepen the ties between the two nations make him an ideal candidate for this prestigious award.

By bestowing the O.E. upon Prime Minister Modi, Guyana would not only be recognizing his personal achievements but also signaling to the world the depth of its commitment to fostering international relationships based on shared goals and mutual respect. It would be a fitting tribute to a leader whose vision and actions have had a tangible impact on the well-being of the people of Guyana.

I urge President Irfaan Ali and the government of Guyana to honour Prime Minister Narendra Modi with The Order of Excellence. This award would be a fitting recognition of his efforts to advance the interests of Guyana and India alike and would serve as a beacon for continued collaboration between the two nations in the years to come.
