I commend the Government of the United States of America and President Donald J. Trump for what has been described as decisive action taken against Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro and his wife. For years, Maduro ruled through fear, oppression, and intimidation—not only against his own people, but against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of my beloved country, Guyana.
This is the same Maduro who openly laid claim to two-thirds of Guyana’s territory and issued repeated threats that placed our nation in a state of uncertainty and insecurity. As a proud Guyanese, I cannot be expected to offer sympathy to a man who sought to undermine our nation’s peace, stability, and borders. On the contrary, I feel safer knowing that such an individual will now be made to face the law for the injustices and threats he directed at Guyana and the wider region.
While I acknowledge that such operations raise serious questions under international law, history has shown us that there are moments when the global community must confront tyranny head-on. Sometimes, we are forced to take the bull by its horns when democratic norms are trampled and diplomacy alone fails to restrain dictators who threaten regional peace.
It would be remiss of me not to commend Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar of Trinidad and Tobago, a leader who demonstrated courage and resolve within the Caribbean. She made bold decisions in the interest of her country and showed genuine humanitarian concern for the suffering people of Venezuela—qualities that define strong and principled leadership.
Sadly, CARICOM has once again proven itself to be a toothless tiger—long on statements, short on action. An organization that cannot decisively safeguard the region or stand firmly in defense of its member states risks irrelevance at a time when the Caribbean needs strength, unity, and clarity of purpose.
Finally, I wish to remind the PPP Government of Guyana that history is unforgiving to administrations that drift toward authoritarianism. Every long rope has an end. No government is above accountability, and no abuse of power lasts forever. The path of dictatorship—whether blatant or subtle—always leads to downfall.
Guyana must remain vigilant, democratic, and resolute in defending its people, its freedoms, and its sovereignty.
