For a common cold, one of the simplest evidence-supported natural options is warm honey and ginger tea. It can soothe a sore throat and cough, although it does not cure the cold. Most colds resolve on their own within about 7–10 days.
Ingredients
– 1 cup hot water
– 1–2 teaspoons fresh grated ginger
– 1–2 teaspoons honey
– Optional: squeeze of lemon
Instructions
1. Bring water to a boil and pour it into a cup.
2. Add the grated ginger and allow it to steep for 5–10 minutes.
3. Strain if desired.
4. Allow the drink to cool slightly, then stir in the honey.
5. Sip slowly, particularly when you have a sore throat or cough.
What the evidence says: Honey has some evidence for reducing cough, particularly nighttime cough, while ginger is traditionally used for respiratory ailments but has not been well established as a treatment for the common cold itself.
Important: Never give honey to a child under 1 year old because of the risk of infant botulism. Ginger can also cause heartburn or stomach discomfort and may interact with some medicines.
