BREAKING: Mohamed’s 500,000-Plus-Follower Facebook Page Shut Down

The Facebook page associated with Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and followed by more than 500,000 people has been shut down, in a development that has sparked fresh controversy amid an ongoing police investigation involving Mohamed. While several Facebook pages bearing the Team Mohamed name remain active, the main page with more than half a million followers is no longer operating.

Village Voice News has been reliably informed that police have also retained Mohamed’s mobile phone following his detention this week.

The circumstances surrounding the shutdown have not been publicly explained. However, the development has prompted claims that the page was hacked or deliberately taken down.

We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) General Secretary Odessa Primus appeared to link the development to the page’s enormous following, saying:

“The young man has a bigger page than the president so that had to go. Bad mind behaviour.”

There has been no publicly confirmed evidence establishing who shut down the page or whether the action was taken by Facebook, an administrator or another party.

The development comes against the backdrop of Thursday’s police operation near President Irfaan Ali’s private residence at Leonora, West Coast Demerara.

Police said they received information at about 6:30 p.m. that persons travelling in a black Toyota Land Cruiser were allegedly operating a drone near the President’s residence.

The vehicle was intercepted on the Windsor Forest Public Road. Mohamed, his driver Eugene Thorne and technician Dwayne Ross were reportedly inside. Police said a DJI drone and four cellular phones were found in the vehicle.

Mohamed has denied owning the drone. Ross reportedly identified himself as its owner and acknowledged that his operating licence had expired in 2023.

Police later searched Ross’s residence, where a second drone was reportedly found.

Mohamed was released on self-bail but was later detained again after returning to the area and broadcasting live on Facebook. Police instructed him to stop the broadcast and subsequently detained him over an alleged breach of “security protocol.” He was later released.

The issue surfaced Friday during Mohamed’s separate extradition proceedings before Chief Magistrate Judy Latchman.

Prosecutor Glenn Hanoman told the court that police were examining electronic devices seized during the investigation to determine whether surveillance had taken place or what may have been intended.

Latchman declined to revoke Mohamed’s bail, indicating that allegations must be supported by evidence.

The shutdown of the main Team Mohamed page is significant because social media has become a major platform for Mohamed’s political communication. With more than 500,000 followers, the page had a reach extending well beyond Guyana and was regularly used to broadcast Mohamed’s activities and political messages.

Mohamed became Leader of the Opposition following the September 2025 general elections, when WIN secured 16 seats in the National Assembly.

His political rise has also coincided with ongoing extradition proceedings requested by the United States. Mohamed and his father, businessman Nazar Mohamed, are accused by US authorities of offences including fraud and money laundering. Both deny wrongdoing.

The shutdown of the page now raises questions about who ordered or carried out the action, the reason for it and whether the platform will be restored.
