By Mark DaCosta- The Guyana Police Force is gearing up for a decisive legal path concerning We Invest In Nationhood (WIN) Member of Parliament (MP) Natasha Singh, who is under scrutiny for allegedly possessing a firearm and ammunition. The unfolding situation suggests an absolute commitment by the authorities to pursue the case rigorously, which may have significant implications for the political landscape.

Singh, who was taken into custody on Wednesday, was granted $200,000 bail later that day. She was also asked to report to a police station this morning as investigators continue their inquiries.

The investigation revolves around a Glock 19 9mm pistol and 13 rounds of ammunition that were purportedly discovered in a vehicle occupied by MP Singh and her husband. Initial police reports reveal that the firearm is registered to fellow Opposition MP Dawn Hastings-Williams. Singh was taken into custody on Wednesday at 1:30 a.m. but was granted a $200,000 bail later that day.

In an official statement from the Guyana Police Force, it was detailed that the inquiry commenced early on August 26, 2026, when officers first contacted Singh regarding the alleged offence of possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence. Following consultations with her legal counsel, she provided a written statement. Shortly thereafter, her husband, Shane Fordyce, was also approached by investigators and did the same after seeking legal advice.

What raises eyebrows in this case is the involvement of Dawn Hastings-Williams, who was interviewed by the police at Regional Police Division 4 ‘B’ Headquarters. She reportedly provided a statement and submitted a copy of her firearm licence for Glock 19, dated February 16, 2026. The police later secured the firearm, magazine, and ammunition for examination at the Ballistics Section in Eve Leary, where they remain.

With Singh back in circulation on bail, the police continue their efforts to probe the intricacies of this case. The police have indicated their intention to compile a comprehensive case file that will be presented to the Director of Public Prosecutions for further legal guidance moving forward.

As details emerge, it is impossible for observers to overlook the political ramifications of this incident. This case comes during a politically charged atmosphere in our nation, where every misstep can be weaponised against opposition elements by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) administration. The investigation could fuel concerns that it is being used to undermine opposition voices, particularly given longstanding allegations of political pressure and efforts to curtail dissent.

The apprehension surrounding this case is twofold: on one hand, it raises pressing questions about the handling of firearms and the legal ramifications of their possession in our country, while on the other, it casts a shadow over the integrity of various political representatives.

While legislative authority is vested in the relevant institutions, the questions lingering in the minds of many citizens pertain to the motivations behind the whole affair. Campaigns are often rendered lifeless when personal controversies overshadow political dialogue. This case, amidst a backdrop of previous accusations against the PPP for a lack of transparency and fairness, risks diverting public attention from the pressing issues facing our society.

As this investigation unfolds, with the police actively seeking further legal advice, it is crucial for the Government to uphold principles of fairness and impartiality, allowing the legal process to take its course without undue influence. Moreover, both the opposition and the people of our country must remain vigilant, ensuring that this episode does not serve as a smokescreen for greater political maneuvering.

The case involving MP Natasha Singh promises to reveal more than just the particulars of firearm possession; it stands at the nexus of justice, political disenfranchisement, and public accountability.
