People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) General Secretary, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo said he would like to see the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) investigate Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Aubrey Norton.

Jagdeo, speaking at his press conference on Thursday, following Norton’s earlier in the day, is apparently offended by a statement, reportedly made by Norton “the government seems to be pushing for physical confrontation and let them know we’re not short of people for a physical confrontation.”

Referring to Norton as a “petty bully” Jagdeo said, “The ERC should pay particular attention to this because we know this guy is a petty bully … he’s getting more and more desperate, and his desperation could cause him to go down this road … It’s bad when the Leader of the Opposition threatens the country and therefore the ERC must look at this and these petty bullies.’

Back on 11th March 2019 then Opposition Leader Jagdeo, speaking at a PPP rally in Babu Jaan, incited supporters to “chase them out” out of their community. He was referring to the leaders and supporters of A Partnership of National Unity and Alliance for Change. In April the same year ranks of the Criminal Investigation Department questioned him.

On 19th September 2019, PPP supporters stormed the vehicle then Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Karen Cummings was travelling in, broke through police barricade at the Pegasus Hotel, and disrupted an event where then President David Granger was speaking.  Mr. Irfaan Ali, now President, was part of that mob. Their violent behaviour was in reaction to the Guyana Elections Commissions announcement the earliest General and Regional Elections could be held was February 2020.
