The 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games officially opened Friday night in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, with a dazzling ceremony celebrating the event’s 100-year history and marking the start of competition among more than 6,000 athletes from 37 countries and territories across the region.

Held before a packed Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium, the 90-minute production carried the theme “100 Years of Unity, One Region, One Heart,” blending music, dance, history and technology to showcase Dominican culture while celebrating the shared heritage of Central America and the Caribbean.

The opening ceremony paid tribute to the Games’ origins in 1926, making Santo Domingo 2026 the centennial edition of the world’s oldest regional multi-sport event. Organisers described the production as a journey through a century of sporting achievement, highlighting both the Dominican Republic’s national identity and the cultural diversity that defines the region.

One of the evening’s most memorable moments came during the traditional parade of athletes, as the 37 participating delegations entered the stadium to enthusiastic applause from thousands of spectators.

The loudest ovation was reserved for the host nation. The Dominican Republic’s delegation, comprising more than 650 athletes, entered led by Olympic and world champion Marileidy Paulino and Olympic boxing bronze medallist Cristián Pinales, who served as the country’s flag bearers.

The symbolic lighting of the Games’ cauldron also proved a highlight. The final leg of the torch relay was completed by Félix Sánchez, the Dominican Republic’s most decorated Olympian and a two-time Olympic gold medallist, drawing cheers from the capacity crowd.

The Games were officially declared open by Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader, who attended the ceremony alongside Panam Sports President Neven Ilic and Centro Caribe Sports President Luis Mejía.

The festivities concluded with an elaborate fireworks and drone display that illuminated the Santo Domingo skyline, bringing the historic opening celebration to a dramatic close.

Attention now shifts from ceremony to competition.

The first medals of the Games will be awarded on Saturday, July 25, when athletes begin competing for 1,555 medals across multiple sporting disciplines.

The opening medal event will be the women’s lightweight double sculls (LW2X) in rowing, followed by medal contests in road cycling, open-water swimming, archery and judo.

Beyond regional supremacy, the Games also serve as an important stepping stone toward the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, with several sports offering qualification opportunities.

Over the coming weeks, the Dominican Republic will welcome thousands of athletes, coaches and officials as the Caribbean and Central America’s finest compete in a celebration of sport, unity and regional pride during the centennial edition of the Games.
