Guyana, Japan open postgraduate doors for young professionals

-through new JICA scholarships

For a young Guyanese engineer, vet, or agricultural scientist with strong grades and a valid passport, a year of postgraduate study in Japan is now within reach.

The Ministry of Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation, working with the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has opened applications for a limited number of scholarships to pursue postgraduate study in Japan for the 2027/2028 academic year.

The awards cover six fields, each tied to areas Guyana is actively building out. These include Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Information Engineering, and Construction and Environmental Engineering at the MEng level. level, alongside Veterinary Science, Water Environmental Engineering, and Plant Genetics and Breeding at the MSc level.

The scholarships target younger professionals at the start of their careers. To qualify, applicants must be 35 years or under at the time of application and hold a valid Guyanese passport. They must also have a relevant bachelor’s degree with a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0.

Those interested are required to register and complete the online application form on the Ministry’s website at https://mps.gov.gy/scholarships/gog/. The closing date for submissions is July 12, 2026.
