The Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) has expressed deep concern over what it describes as a troubling rise in allegations of sexual misconduct involving its members, warning that the issue reflects broader systemic failures within the education sector.
In a press statement, the union said it is “deeply troubled by the spikes in allegations of sexual misconduct that are being levelled against our members,” noting that recent claims circulating on social media have heightened public concern. The GTU added that “the fact is that there is a total breakdown in the system,” which has disrupted not only the lives of those directly involved, but also schools, communities, and the wider education sector.
Recent reports have underscored the seriousness of the issue, with authorities investigating multiple allegations involving teachers and students, including incidents in which educators were placed on administrative leave or brought before the courts on charges related to sexual offences. These developments have intensified concerns about student safety, accountability, and the need for stronger safeguards within schools.
While condemning the allegations in the strongest terms, the union called for swift and comprehensive investigations, stating that “the chips fall where they have to.” It emphasised its role as a professional body and urged teachers to uphold the highest standards of conduct.
“We are a professional organisation and we will continue to call on our members to exhibit Professional and Matured behaviours at all times when having to engage learners,” the statement said. “We must remind you our teachers that you are the agents of change… If you act contrary, then you will face the consequences of your actions.”
The GTU also placed responsibility on the Ministry of Education, urging a more proactive and collaborative approach to addressing the issue. It called for stronger support systems, including ongoing professional development sessions, greater engagement with teachers, and regular school visits.
“It is clear that your non engagement and think you alone can do will not work,” the union stated, while urging closer partnership between the ministry and the GTU to strengthen standards across the sector.
The Union concluded by again calling on its members to “desist from these unacceptable practices and conduct yourselves with Pride and Dignity,” as concerns mount over the impact of the allegations on public trust in the education system.
