GDF Units Battle for Top Honours in Annual Cross-Country Competition

Ranks across the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) were on full display as soldiers gathered at Base Camp Seweyo for the annual Inter-Unit Male and Female Cross-Country Competition 2026, a physically demanding event that tested endurance, speed, and discipline.

Held on Thursday, March 12, the competition brought together participants from various units across the Force, reinforcing the GDF’s emphasis on physical readiness and unit cohesion. The event remains a staple on the military’s sporting calendar, showcasing not only athletic ability but also the core values that underpin military service.

Conducted in accordance with the regulations of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and the Athletic Association of Guyana, the race adhered to recognised international standards, ensuring a fair and competitive environment for all participants.

In the male category, 1 Infantry Battalion delivered a commanding performance to secure first place, demonstrating both stamina and teamwork. 31 Special Forces Battalion followed closely in second position, while Base Camp Ayanganna claimed third, rounding out a competitive field.

The female category saw the Coast Guard emerge victorious with an impressive showing. Base Camp Seweyo secured second place, while the Guyana National Reserve finished third, highlighting the strength and resilience of the Force’s female ranks.

Beyond competition, the event served as a reminder of the GDF’s broader mission. The Inter-Unit Cross-Country Competition continues to highlight the camaraderie, discipline, and physical standards expected of its members, while reinforcing the enduring values of teamwork, perseverance, and excellence.
