The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and India reaffirmed their long-standing ties of friendship and cooperation during a farewell courtesy call on CARICOM Secretary-General, Dr. Carla Barnett, by the Ambassador of India to CARICOM, H.E. Dr. Amit Telang, on Tuesday, 3 February.

The meeting, held at the Secretary-General’s residence in Georgetown, provided an opportunity to acknowledge the progress in CARICOM-India relations during Ambassador Telang’s tenure. Dr. Barnett expressed her gratitude, stating that she appreciated “Ambassador Telang for advancing engagement between CARICOM and India during his tenure.” She also highlighted India’s contributions to the Region, particularly during times of crisis, including the provision of COVID‑19 vaccines to CARICOM.

In response, Ambassador Telang conveyed India’s thanks to the Secretary-General, noting the Secretariat’s support in strengthening CARICOM-India ties, including through the 2024 CARICOM-India Summit held in Guyana. He also highlighted ongoing initiatives, mentioning “the training opportunities provided by India to CARICOM Member States” and expressed appreciation for the active participation of the Region in these programmes.

Both parties reaffirmed the bonds of cooperation between CARICOM and India, with Dr. Barnett and Ambassador Telang exchanging best wishes as he concludes his term in Guyana.
