The two-time champions West Indies have announced their squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. They are placed in Group C of the competition along with England, Italy, Nepal, and Scotland.

Led by Shai Hope, the 15-member squad comprises of of multiple match winners and experienced T20 players including Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, Rovman Powell, and Sherfane Rutherford. However, with legends like Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, and Andre Russell retired, this mega event will mark a fresh start in Windies cricket.

Strengths

West Indies’ squad blends seasoned campaigners with solid T20 experience. Leaders like Shai Hope, Jason Holder and Johnson Charles bring a big-match temperament and a steady head around the park. Several players in the squad have been an integral part of the Indian Premier League(IPL) and that will play a crucial role in their campaign.

The batting unit possesses both power and flexible options. Players such as Shimron Hetmyer, Brandon King and Sherfane Rutherford offer strike-power at different phases, while the surprise inclusion of Quentin Sampson, riding strong CPL form, adds further firepower.

West Indies have a mix of pace and spin. With options like Jayden Seales, Matthew Forde and Shamar Joseph, they can test batting line-ups. Spin all-rounders like Akeal Hosein, along with Gudakesh Motie and Roston Chase, give tactical depth, especially on slower tracks. Lastly, being a two-time T20 World Cup winner brings confidence, especially in high-pressure contests.

Weaknesses

A major concern is the absence of impact players due to fitness issues. With their premier fast-bower Alzarri Joseph ruled out injured, it deprives the team of raw pace and wicket-taking punch. The retirements of veteran match-winners like Nicholas Pooran and Andre Russell has also weakened the side significantly.

West Indies have shown flashes but are inconsistent in performance. They recently lost the T20I series against Afghanistan, and it is a challenge for them to maintain consistency.

Opportunities

With a relatively balanced squad and several big hitters in the batting line-up, West Indies have the chance to re-assert themselves as a top T20 side.Emerging players like Sampson can cement their place on the global stage if they translate domestic T20 success into impactful performances. A breakout tournament from one or two lesser-known players could lift the entire squad.

Their Group C schedule, including matches against Scotland, Nepal and Italy, presents an opportunity to rack up wins and build net run-rate advantage, which can become crucial with England included in the same group.

Threats

West Indies’ bowling attack could struggle to defend totals or make breakthroughs at key moments without Alzarri Joseph. Further, with their squad consisting of several youngsters, the team could falter under the pressure of a big tournament such as the World Cup. The collective experience helps, but over-reliance on a few senior individuals could be risky.
