The United Workers Party (UWP) is deeply troubled that the Ministry of Labour has still not released its findings into the many concerns raised by workers at Gold Mountain, a subsidiary of Zijin Mining. These workers—ordinary Guyanese mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters—deserve answers. They deserve to know that their wellbeing matters.
While the country waits for the Ministry’s report, the workers continue to face poor food quality, uncomfortable and sometimes unsafe working conditions, and a shortage of vital protective equipment. These are not minor inconveniences—these are issues that affect people’s health, dignity, and ability to return home safely after each shift.
Behind every complaint is a human being trying to earn a living for their family. No worker should have to worry about whether their meal is safe, whether their environment is healthy, or whether the lack of proper safety gear puts them at risk.
The UWP believes that respect for workers must begin with ensuring their basic human needs are met. Mining is hard, demanding work, and the individuals who keep this sector alive deserve nothing less than proper care, transparency, and timely action from those in authority.
We therefore call on the Ministry of Labour to release its findings without delay and clearly state what steps will be taken to correct these longstanding issues. Workers must not be left waiting in uncertainty while their concerns continue to grow.
The United Workers Party will continue to stand with the workers of Gold Mountain. Their voices matter, their safety matters, and their dignity matters. We remain committed to advocating for fair treatment and humane working conditions across every corner of Guyana.
