The Power of the People is Greater Than the People in Power

Dear Editor,

A single, powerful truth must guide us in this moment: the power of the people is, and will always be, greater than the people in power. Our nation stands at a crossroads, and the path we choose will be determined not by the edicts of a few, but by the collective will of the many.

We have heard the vision of “One Guyana” invoked often. True “One Guyana” is not a slogan to be wielded by a single party; it is the sacred embodiment of our collective nation. It is every citizen, of every ethnicity, from every region, united by a common destiny and protected by a shared Constitution. It is the promise that this country belongs to all of us.

Yet, we see this vision being betrayed. The EU’s electoral report confirmed what many feared: the state’s data was abused for partisan campaigning, and the incumbency advantage was weaponised. The response from those in power was not to fix the system, but to justify the imbalance. When the government and the party become indistinguishable—when state resources become party tools and critics are silenced—we are no longer witnessing governance. We are witnessing the monopolisation of our national identity.

This is a call to awaken our national consciousness. To every public official who swore an oath to the Constitution: remember, you serve the State and its people, not a political machine. Your power is on loan from us.

And to every citizen: our power does not lie only in our vote. It lies in our voice. It lies in our refusal to be divided. It lies in our demand for accountability.

Let us wield our power now:

1. Be Vigilant: Question, analyze, and speak out against injustice.
2. Be Unified: Reject the politics of division. True “One Guyana” is built by us, in our communities.
3. Be Active: Demand the implementation of laws like the Data Protection Act. Attend community meetings. Support a free press. Hold your representatives accountable.

The future of Guyana is not a gift to be given by those in power; it is a right to be shaped by our hands, our voices, and our collective will. Let us send an unmistakable message: this nation is our One Guyana. We will defend it, we will define it, and we will decide its destiny, together.

Our Nation. Our Future. Our Power.
In Solidarity, For One Guyana, By The People.

Yours truly,
Hemdutt Kumar
