Guyana to Host Historic Return of Caribbean Women’s Basketball Championship

In a major coup for local sports, Guyana has been awarded the hosting rights for the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Women’s Championship.

The tournament, marking its triumphant return after a six-year hiatus, is set to electrify the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall from November 9-17.

This year’s championship is not just a homecoming for the event, last held in Suriname in 2018, but also a critical battleground for some of the Caribbean’s seasoned and emerging talent.

Ten of the region’s top women’s national teams will compete for coveted qualifying spots for the Women’s CentroBasket Tournament, a direct pathway to the prestigious FIBA Women’s AmeriCup.

The President of the Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF), Michael Singh, expressed immense pride in the decision. “FIBA showing this confidence in us and accepting our bid shows that they’re paying attention to the work we’ve been doing over the past couple of years. More importantly, it confirms Guyana’s ability as a country to host international sporting events at the highest level.”

With the bid secured, the focus now shifts to execution. President Singh confirmed the GBF will immediately begin collaborations with the Government of Guyana, through the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the National Sports Commission, to ensure a flawless tournament.

A key priority will be the preparation of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall to bring it up to international standards. A Local Organising Committee (LOC) will also be established shortly to spearhead the event’s planning and operations.

The tournament carries deep historical significance for the host nation. Guyana itself is a former champion, having etched its name in the record books by capturing its first Caribbean title at the 1996 Caricom Basketball Championship in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
