By Mark DaCosta- The Alliance for Change (AFC) has officially recognised the results of the 2025 General and Regional Elections as announced by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), which confirms a victory for the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) led by Mr. Irfaan Ali. After a year fraught with preparation and public engagement, the AFC issued a statement expressing gratitude to the citizens who participated in the electoral process, while emphasising their commitment to good governance.

The AFC has expressed its challenges in navigating the political landscape, particularly in dealings with GECOM, but ultimately accepted the election results. In their statement, the party extended congratulations to the PPPC leader, marking a new chapter in governance.

However, the AFC did not shy away from addressing some troubling aspects surrounding the electoral process. They specifically referenced the comments made by Observer Missions regarding the electoral campaign. These missions raised concerns about the influence of campaign financing and reported misuse of state resources in favour of the ruling party. This observation raises questions about the fairness of the electoral process, as the incumbent party seemingly enjoyed an undue advantage.

The call for electoral reform has now gained renewed urgency. Observer groups have suggested that GECOM and the newly formed administration need to heed their recommendations regarding campaign financing to ensure integrity in future elections. Transparency in political funding is vital if our nation hopes to uphold democratic values; without it, the fears of unequal competition will linger. The misuse of public resources for party campaigns poses a direct threat to the principles of fairness and equality that should underlie any electoral process.

Residents of our country showed remarkable resilience during the electoral period, exercising their democratic right to vote amidst tensions. In the face of imminent change, the AFC thanked these citizens for their commitment to a peaceful transition. Their message underscored that engagement and active participation remain essential facets of democracy — a plea for unity in the face of choices made at the ballot box.

Furthermore, the AFC reiterated its dedication to advocating for justice, equity, and fair representation of all citizens. This commitment highlights a fundamental issue in our political landscape — that every voice matters, and must be upheld in the governance of our Guyana. Despite the recent election results, the party’s resolve to pursue accountability and transparency remains steadfast.

With this electoral cycle concluded, the AFC’s leadership signals to the Guyanese populace its intention to continue fighting for what they deem necessary for equitable governance. They stress that a vibrant democracy is not merely determined by the outcome of an election but by the continuous engagement of all citizens in the political processes that affect their lives. As the PPPC takes the reins of power, many will keep a close watch on how it responds to challenges highlighted by observers — a critical test for the new administration as it navigates the complexities of leadership in our beloved nation.

In accepting the election results, the AFC has opened a dialogue centred on future reforms, giving hope that voices calling for equity and fairness will not be silenced. According to an analyst  “Our country’s democratic ethos stands on a knife edge, and it will take the collective will of its leaders and citizens to forge a path forward that truly serves the interests of all.”
