By Mark DaCosta- In a spirited declaration, Bonita Montaque, a well-respected veteran advocate for women’s and children’s rights, has voiced her unwavering support for the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) ahead of the forthcoming regional and general elections scheduled for September 1, 2025.
Montaque, who is no stranger to the challenges faced by many citizens, emphasised her belief in the leadership of Aubrey Compton Norton, the APNU’s presidential candidate, alongside Juretha Fernandes and Ganesh Mahipaul, emphasising their experience and commitment to nation-building.
Montaque’s endorsement comes during a period marked by widespread discontent with the current government, which she criticises for perpetuating hardship and failing to deliver on its promises. “As a Patriotic Guyanese whose life has been dedicated to service,” she remarked, “I have firsthand experience of victimization, injustices, failed promises and policies.” Her commitment to serving the community, both as a member of the armed forces and in civil society, has provided her with a unique perspective on the socio-political landscape of our nation.
The activist’s long-standing relationship with Norton has fostered her confidence in his ability to lead. “I have known Aubrey Compton Norton for a number of years and watched his dedication and commitment to the development of Guyanese,” she stated, highlighting his resilience and strategic foresight.
Montaque believes that if such progress could be made with limited resources, the potential for growth and advancement would be monumental with a more substantial backing. She optimistically envisions a future where citizens are relieved from the burdens imposed by inadequate leadership, saying, “our nation can smile again, knowing the knees of our oppressors are finally off our necks.”
Montaque’s endorsement reflects a hopeful vision for safer streets and improved living conditions in our country. She noted the APNU’s commitment to free education from nursery to university, alongside other significant reforms, as key pillars of their manifesto. Montaque highlighted the urgent need for change amid rampant complaints about escalating hardships, stating, “Many of you have complained bitterly of hardship you experience daily.” Her call to action implores voters, especially women and youth, to rally behind the APNU’s vision for a brighter future.
Recognising the desperation behind many citizens’ struggles, she stresses the importance of trusting in the APNU’s policies rather than succumbing to short-term temptations presented by rival parties. “Don’t be influenced by the hype, short-term vibes, the wild lyrics and a few dollars just for today,” she urged. Montaque’s message resonates particularly with the youth, many of whom have reached out to her over the years. She says, “today trust me with your vote so I can advance your cause for a better life.”
With an unmistakable clarity of purpose, Montaque underlines the distinctiveness of the APNU team — comprising dynamic leaders, including a phenomenal female politician and a dedicated male counterpart. This diversity is not only commendable but essential for the nation’s development, signalling to the electorate that APNU is prepared and capable of governing effectively.
Montaque’s appeal to the electorate serves as both an endorsement and a reminder of the critical role every voter plays in shaping the nation’s future. “APNU team sees you, APNU team cares and APNU team will work for you,” she asserted, reaffirming her belief that genuine change is attainable under the right leadership.
As the nation steers toward the upcoming elections, the call for a thoughtful, long-term vision is paramount.
Her final rallying cry encapsulates the essence of her message: “This is your time. I endorse APNU. Vote APNU.”
