By GHK Lall- Though he was flying high on the political radar, flying is now out for WIN’s Azruddin Mohamed. Sanctions from the US now rate higher than sanctions from God. A lot of people told me that America is a god-fearing country. There is god, mother, country, and apple pie. I am for all four, and in that exact order. But the line is drawn when US sanctions replace the divine commandments and sanctions of the Almighty. But that isn’t where Guyana is with US sanctions on Mr. Mohamed. No flying. What is next?

Could he be prevented from boarding a minibus at the Berbice or Linden bus park? I must ask US Ambassador to Guyana, Excellency Nicole D. Theriot, the next time there is an interaction, what’s her take on all of these US sanctions actions in Guyana against Mr. Mohamed.
Her Excellency was kind and gracious enough to remind illiterate and mindless Guyanese that US sanctions pertains to what happens in the US. Thanks, Ambassador. One of these days Guyanese will develop some standards, carry themselves with the requisite decorum around these things.
Okay, it is that time. Somebody has got to take a stand, show dat deh gat biggah bowling balls than good ole Uncle Sam. It might as well be me, favorite son and all. There is certainty that Uncle Sam would not mind the competition, the objection, for these are the prime elements on what America was built. Competition and disagreement; both are healthy, both have made America great (will do so again [maybe]). Some Guyanese businesses and Guyanese citizens (redundancy?) have gone sanctions crazy and driven their sanctions garbage truck too far. What else can it be, a Rolls-Royce or Ferrari, like I have been reading about?
I take the plunge and in full public view, in front of everybody: PPP, PNC, and let me check to ensure that I didn’t leave out anyone. I have a bicycle that needs one tire, while the other one needs some air. Warning: no bell, no light, no brakes. Mr. Mohamed can have it free of charge. If he is interested, I can do the handover either in front of the US Embassy on Duke Street, or the Office of the President that is close to zoo. That location makes a world of sense, doesn’t it? I mean there is a full compliment. Animal trainers, wild animal tamers, and domestic animal lovers. Think of that cat’s meow, Live in Guyana, among other house pets.
Now, I don’t know how the PPP aristocracy and punditocracy is going to take this, but I believe in full disclosure. Blue has always be my favorite color. Central High School and its blue shirt and blue tie. The blue in the red, white, and blue flag of in God we Trust, America. Where else, folks? Music that makes others feel blue. Ages before Mr. Mohamed and WIN adopted blue as their color, I owned it. Confession: there are more pieces of apparel in blue than all the other colors combined. Like I said, Blue is beautiful. Blue is the best.
Yeah, but tell that to the man who now can’t fly due to the imposition of sanctions. He had better not catch a cold, because I suspect that Guyana’s drug stores may get a case of the shivers and refuse to fill his prescription, even for so much as Tylenol. Now, being a citizen with an inquisitive and persistent mind, I must respectfully ask, the Hon Minister of Health, Dr. Frankie Anthony, MD, DD, PhD a simple question. Is the US sanctioned Azruddin Mohamed allowed to passthrough the gates of the Georgetown Public Hospital in search of treatment for any medical matter that may arise?
I have heard about cabin fever, but this is the first time that I am encountering sanctions fever. Diagnosis: advanced pneumonia. No banking. No flying. I recall that great United Airlines commercial from 1968, long a personal favorite. “Come fly with me”. Still rings well in the ear, gives a warm glow to the cheeks, particularly the accompanying human image(s).
Well, the man from WIN will have to learn what it means to walk with the assurance of America’s Roy Hamilton and England’s Liverpool Football Club, “You’ll never walk alone.” ‘Walk on, walk on….’ Indeed, necessity of urgent circumstances is the mother of adaptation. If WIN is interested, the bicycle is still available. They could send the police for me. No banking. No flying. For this US sanctioned Guyanese, now under attack from all sides, soon it could be no food buying, no bread shopping. The US sanctioned Mohamed could fly from GT to Bridgetown to meet US officials, but he can’t fly here. This is not a country. Guyana is now one of Dante’s higher circles of hell.
