In the sun-soaked paradise of the Turks and Caicos Islands, known for its turquoise waters, luxury resorts, and vibrant cultural blend influenced by African, Caribbean, and British traditions, Sueann Archer is winning hearts and appetites with the rich flavours of Guyana.

A proud daughter of the Land of Many Waters, Sueann has turned her lifelong passion for cooking into a thriving culinary venture through her business, Guyanese Tasty Dishes, based in Providenciales. This island, the most developed in the British Overseas Territory, is the heart of the tourism industry and home to the world-famous Grace Bay Beach.

Nestled in a local community, Sueann’s kitchen draws in food lovers, tourists, and locals alike. The scent of spices wafting through the air leads them to her doorstep, and the flavours they experience keep them coming back. With freshly prepared Guyanese meals served daily, her small eatery offers a taste of home for many and an exciting culinary journey for others.

Sueann shared that her love for cooking began in childhood. Watching her mother, family, and friends in the kitchen sparked her interest, and at just 11 years old, she cooked her very first dish—chowmein.

Though trained as a teacher, Sueann taught in both Guyana and Turks and Caicos before transitioning fully to entrepreneurship. Cooking initially started as a side job, but her passion quickly outgrew the sidelines. The joy of sharing Guyanese food and the encouragement from her community led her to pursue it full time.

It was a decision well made. “Roti and curry are the islanders’ favourite,” she said. “Sometimes they order five or six rotis at once. They also love the pastries.” Her menu has become a staple in the area, satisfying cravings and stirring memories of home.

More than just a chef, Archer has become a cultural ambassador. Every meal she prepares tells a story of Guyana’s history, flavours, and resilience. From pepperpot to patties to cook-up rice, each dish celebrates the country’s heritage in a deeply personal way.

Her work reflects the broader vision of Guyana’s tourism sector. Food plays a vital role in connecting people to the country’s rich cultural identity. Traditional dishes not only satisfy appetites but also evoke stories of community, heritage, and strength. Initiatives like Guyana Restaurant Week and participation in international food festivals create opportunities for local and diaspora chefs to showcase Guyanese cuisine to the world.

Archer’s journey carries even greater significance during Emancipation, a time to honour the endurance and pride of a people. For her, food is not just sustenance. It is remembrance. It is connection. It is identity. Each dish she serves is filled with the warmth of Guyana, the richness of its traditions, and the spirit of its people.

Though she cooks in Turks and Caicos, every bite brings Guyana closer. Through passion, flavour, and heritage, Sueann Archer proves that culture can travel far, live strong, and taste unforgettable.
