Today, on this sacred observance of Emancipation Day, The Institute for Action Against Discrimination (IFAAD) stands in deep reverence and solidarity with all Guyanese as we honour the strength, sacrifice, and spirit of our African ancestors who resisted the brutality of slavery and laid the foundation for our ongoing struggle for freedom, justice, and equality.

Emancipation is not merely a moment in history—it is a living call to action. While the chains of physical bondage were broken on August 1st, 1838, the struggle against systemic discrimination, economic exclusion, and social inequality continues to this day. It is our duty to ensure that emancipation is not symbolic, but real—reflected in equal rights, equitable opportunities, and the full dignity of every person.

Literacy, numeracy being strengthened through teacher training, assessments – Min Parag

As an organisation committed to justice, human rights, and dismantling all forms of oppression, IFAAD calls upon all sectors of society to renew their commitment to building a Guyana where no one is judged by race, class, or background, and where the legacy of our ancestors is honoured through action—not just remembrance.

Let us teach the truth of our history. Let us protect the rights of the marginalized. Let us raise our voices against racism in every form. And let us build a future where the ideals of Emancipation live not just in word, but in law, in policy, and in practice.

Happy Emancipation Day

Let us honour the past by fighting for justice today.
