By Mark DaCosta- In a bold move signalling a new beginning for our nation, the APNU Coalition has unveiled its ambitious plans for the first hundred days in office, promising substantial improvements to the living standards of all citizens. The party is poised to utilise the country’s oil resources to enact a series of significant economic and social reforms aimed at benefiting the populace directly. This initiative is anchored in the belief that development should prioritise the welfare of the people rather than merely enhancing infrastructure.

As the APNU Coalition prepares to assume leadership, the government has pledged to implement a supplementary budget that would facilitate immediate action on various pressing issues. One of the most notable proposals includes a cash payment of $100,000 to adult residents, which is expected to provide essential financial relief to many households across the country. This initiative, alongside an increase in the tax-free earnings threshold to $400,000 per month, aims to relieve over 225,000 workers and self-employed individuals from excessive tax burdens, thereby enhancing their disposable incomes.

In recognition of the hard work of public sector employees, the coalition says it plans to raise wages across various sectors, including education and healthcare, by up to 35 percent. Moreover, a significant boost to the old-age pension, set to reach $100,000 a month, represents a commitment to the nation’s elderly population, reflecting a much-needed acknowledgment of their contributions over the years. Students in tertiary and technical institutes are also set to benefit, receiving a monthly stipend of $50,000 to support their educational endeavours.

Acknowledging the rising cost of living, particularly in light of global inflation and local economic challenges, the APNU Coalition will also introduce urgent measures including the provision of two hot meals daily for school children and the doubling of public assistance and social support programmes. In a move to boost agricultural sustainability, a nationwide programme will be initiated to promote and support local farmers across all regions. This comprehensive plan aims not only to tackle immediate economic pressures but also to lay the groundwork for long-term stability and growth.

Furthermore, the new government intends says to engage in discussions with ExxonMobil concerning the Stabroek Block Production Sharing Agreement with a view to fostering beneficial outcomes for our country. The coalition also aims to amend existing legislation concerning the Natural Resource Fund to safeguard savings for future generations and to mitigate the impact of fluctuating oil prices.

Transparency and accountability form the backbone of the APNU’s proposed governance reforms. With the intention of releasing all contracts related to oil, gas, and major projects to the public, the coalition seeks to foster trust and assure the citizens that their interests are being prioritised. Additionally, a professional and independent Petroleum Commission will be established to oversee the sector and ensure that it operates in the best interest of the country.

The APNU Coalition is also said to be determined to advocate for justice for the families affected by the Mahdia tragedy, ensuring that victims’ families receive the recognition and support they deserve. As expressed in the press release, the coalition is committed to “ensuring the well-being of all the people,” and will not overlook those who have faced discrimination or unjust deprivation of property from previous administrations.

As the APNU Coalition embarks on this ambitious agenda, they are optimistic about fulfilling their broader vision of significant poverty reduction and social equity by the end of their term in 2030. The coalition aims to create a solid social protection system, deliver high-quality health services, and promote ethnic harmony and community development. They are eager to foster a society that meets the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with a focused commitment toward lifting the quality of life for all our citizens.

The upcoming changes signal a renewed hope for many Guyanese who have long awaited meaningful improvements to their living conditions. The APNU Coalition’s vision, as presented in a press statement,  represents a shift towards prioritising the people’s needs, showcasing their dedication to transforming our nation into a thriving and prosperous society.
